A Wife’s Prayer

A Wife’s Prayer is a Mysteries of Kyoto quest that starts on Kiyomizu-zaka Slope and leads to Okuno-in Hall at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The route below covers finding the wife, sealing the Rift and reaching the story's completion. Inputs use the PlayStation layout.

Start at the sick man’s house

Choose Travel → Eastern Kyoto → Kiyomizu-zaka Slope at a Spirit Mirror. From the arrival mirror, walk downhill past the residents. Look on the right for the open-front house with rolled mats, stacked boxes and a cart beside the entrance.

Enter and speak to the Gravely Ill Man on the floor. Finish his dialogue, then leave the house and continue the conversation with Murasaki in butterfly form. New Story — A Wife’s Prayer appears, with the objective Head for Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Ask the old woman and the temple couple

Return to the Spirit Mirror and select Travel → Kiyomizu-dera Temple → The Approach. Climb the approach stairs to the old woman at the upper gate and speak with her. The objective changes to Continue your search.

Go through the gate and climb the stairs between the stone walls. At the top, take the stairs on the right beside the small hall. Follow the stone path with the red wooden balustrade, past the red maple and through the gateway beside the large roots. A Spirit Mirror stands beside this gateway.

Continue onto the large wooden temple deck. Find the man and woman beside the hall, near the massive roots, and speak with them. Their information changes the objective to Head for Okuno-in Hall.

Reach Okuno-in Hall

Leave the couple's deck by the outer stone steps beside the roots and balustrade. Follow the path down past the rubble, then climb the short steps onto the wooden veranda of the adjacent building.

Follow the veranda around the building. The wife is praying at the small lattice altar along the hall's side. Approach to trigger the scene with Murasaki. When control returns, check for Seal the Rift.

Continue along the outside veranda, turn around its corner and descend the steps into the stone courtyard. The red Rift hangs beside the damaged low wooden building, below the hall. Destination Reached appears as you enter.

Clear the Genma and absorb the Rift

Fight the successive groups beneath the Rift. Keep the open stone path available so the smaller attackers cannot pin you against the buildings. Use Square (□) for short sword combinations when nearby enemies leave an opening; step away when the group closes around you.

Later groups include a shield bearer, umbrella enemies and a heavier attacker. Deal with one nearby threat at a time and use hold and release R2 to shoot enemies farther across the courtyard. If the Rift remains red after the nearest group falls, check around the damaged building and the opposite steps for a remaining enemy.

Once the enemies are cleared, the Rift darkens and Absorb Rift — L2 appears. Face it and hold L2 until the absorption finishes. The red growth clears and the objective changes to Speak with the sick man’s wife.

Return to the wife and finish the story

Climb the stone stairs back to the hall, step onto the veranda and follow it around to the same lattice altar. Approach the wife and finish the conversation.

Continue the following scenes with Murasaki. The story moves back to the husband's house and then to Murasaki's explanation; let these scenes finish. At Yasaka Shrine, Story Complete — A Wife’s Prayer appears with:

• Iron × 2
• Cotton Cloth × 1
• Power Stone × 2

These are the story rewards. The materials received immediately after sealing the Rift are a separate payout.

Optional discovery: A Gift of Compassion

On the large wooden temple deck beside the massive root, before the conversation with the couple, you can investigate the purple trace on the floor. This updates A Gift of Compassion in the Curious Cases records. It is a separate discovery; continue speaking with the couple to advance the search for the wife.
